Rancho Santa Fe, California Real Estate Rancho Santa Fe: Privacy and Charm
When control of the southern region of California passed to Mexico from the Spanish in 1822, many of its inhabitants were sons and grandsons of the original Spanish settlers. These aristocratic owners of enormous "rancheros" quickly became influential in government. Thus, many thousands of acres in what is now San Diego County became privately owned during the early Mexican regime. During this time, the then alcalde (or, mayor) of the City of San Diego, Juan Maria Osuna, claimed the land known as Rancho San Dieguito in 1840. His eldest son, Leandro, lived in a three-room adobe overlooking El Camino Real, and Osuna soon built his own adobe about a mile east. Restored in 1923, the house is located in what is now Rancho Santa Fe, California.
The city got its name from the second transcontinental railroad to reach California. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company had purchased large portions of the former Osuna Ranch in northern San Diego County. The land was regarded as a rich resource for eucalyptus trees, then viewed as a key raw material for the railway ties needed to expand west. When the eucalyptus wood proved too soft for the job, Sydney Nelson financed the purchase of the ten square mile plot to launch a new community and named it Rancho Santa Fe.
In recent times, Hollywood legends Bing Crosby, Victor Mature, Robert Young and early film stars Douglas Fairbanks and wife, Mary Pickford, played important roles in the founding and popularization of the resort town. Other prominent Rancho residents have included Joan Kroc (philanthropist and widow of McDonald's founder Ray Kroc), opera diva Iris Leeds, former astronaut Wally Schirra, retired Texas Senator Lloyd Bentsen, nuclear physicist Benjamin deForest Bayly, singer Juice Newton, former NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle, and tycoon Howard Hughes. Non-resident property owners include Microsoft Founder and CEO Bill Gates, the Sultan of Brunei, and sitcom actress Betty White.
Rancho Santa Fe has restrictions that set it apart from most other communities. Development is limited to Spanish architecture, there are no traffic signals, and there are no streets that are wider than two lanes. All streets outside of the downtown area lined with trees. Very few homes are visible from outside of their respective properties. These requirements guarantee the privacy and charm of this incredible community.
